Helpful Tip Whenever you check in get a card from your Hotel/Hostel so you can always find your way back . Hostels and Guest House For a long term stay you can stay here for 5000 baht a month Banwiang Guesthouse For short term this is a popular party hostel Julies GuesthousePlaces Nearby I never heard about this place till I started hearing about how wonderful it is from other travelers a place called Pai . It is about 3 hrs north of Chang Mai up in the mountains and very laid back town with a hippy like atmosphere. Very easy to get to around $ 150 baht and most Hostels or Hotels can book a van for you. Pai Information Taking Trains Depending on the route sleeper cars can fill up fast and the closer to a full moon party the harder it is to get decent train accommodation south and I traveled in 3rd class one time and can only say for short trips sure, long trips NO WAY!!! . This article covers trains in Thailand very well and I suggest always booking ahead in high season and you can even get a discount by referencing the writers site. Thailand Train Link

Best and cheapest food in Chiang Mai is from the markets -my personal favourites are Chiang Puak gate market (good place for curried beef/chicken and yellow basmati rice) and Chiang Mai gate market.
Chiang Mai gate has a lot to offer including... Shrimp tempura, french fries (if you have a craving), pork noodle soup, sushi, pork belly, hainanese chicken and rice, banana/nutella/condensed milk crepes and much more - all around 30 - 70 baht.
Also the Sunday night market has the most amazing food (and a large variety of world cuisines) in the grounds of the temple 'Wat Sum Pow'.
